The World's Unhealthy Obsession with Plastic

How procurement and supply chain can help

It’s been in the news a lot lately. Plastic is everywhere, and we’re not just talking about too many water bottles and grocery bags.

Plastic fibers are found in 83% of the world’s tap water and 90% of the world’s most popular bottled water brands. Our oceans contain 500 times more microplastic particles than stars in our galaxy, leading to widespread contamination in seafood.

No one consciously wants to contribute to this problem, but collectively we’re buying 300 million tons of plastic every year. Likely half of this is single-use, throw-away packaging.

There is no simple resolution to this, but together we can start to tackle the problem. This paper is for all stakeholders who could play a role: governments (Did you know that at least one nation is looking at taxing plastic in the supply chain?), packaging manufacturers, brand owners, consumers and – this is where SAP Ariba and our customers come in – procurement and supply chain professionals.
